Celebrating a Century of Color
Crayola Announces 100th Birthday Festivities

Easton, PA -- September 19, 2003 – Get out a crayon and mark your calendar! Crayola is celebrating its 100th birthday with a colorful celebration here on Saturday, October 11, and everyone is invited to the party.

I love a parade
The grand finale event begins at 10:30 a.m., when the "Discover the Color of Crayola Parade" begins its descent down Northampton Street and marches through Centre Square. Starting with the "birth" of the first eight Crayola colors in 1903, the 13-division parade celebrates colorful moments in Crayola’s 100-year history with floats, bands and a colorful cast of characters, including the Cray-yo-la yo-yo team. Local bands participating in the parade include: Easton High School, Freedom High School, Lehigh University, Shawnee Middle School, Saucon Valley High School, Central Catholic High School and Pen Argyl High School. Strolling and stage performers will entertain the crowds waiting for the magic to begin, starting at 9:00 a.m.

In with the New and Out With …
Following the parade on the main stage, we’ll announce the names selected for our four new colors introduced earlier this year, and recognize the crayon fans from around the country who named them. We’ll also reveal which four colors got pink slipped, so these new hues can reside inside the Crayola box. Did burnt sienna get the boot? Find out on October 11th.

A COLOSSAL Crayon
Next it’s on to the grand spectacle -- unveiling the World’s Largest Crayon, made with the help of kids across the country who contributed their blue "leftolas" to help us break the current world record. These worn down bits of blue Crayola crayon were melted down and molded into a 15-ft. long crayon, weighing nearly 1,500 pounds. "Clyde O. Scope," played by Easton High School senior Jordan Grubb, will unveil the colossal blue crayon on the main stage with an explosion of color and confetti.

Forty Feet of Fun
Here’s your last chance to experience The Crayola ART-rageous Adventure Tour. Our 100th birthday bus has been traveling the country since February collecting leftolas and giving kids from California to North Carolina the chance to experience a new world of next-century Crayola products like Spider Writers, Twistables and Color Wonder. Covered in color from bumper-to-bumper, the ART-rageous bus spans 40 feet, and the creative space outside covers nearly half a basketball court. Kids can color on see-through walls, paint with melted crayons and build things with special markers that click together like building blocks.

Fun Factory
The festivities continue inside at The Crayola FACTORY at Two Rivers Landing -- open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This hands-on discovery center has something to offer kids of every age. Since 1903, Binney & Smith has made more than 120 billion crayons. See how we make those famous sticks of wax and get creative with the colorful world of Crayola products! Admission is $9 per person and includes entry to The Crayola FACTORY and the National Canal Museum.

The World’s A Stage
Music, magic and mime -- a variety of family entertainment on the main stage and strolling performers throughout the day offer something for everyone. From 1-4 p.m. (see schedule), kids can create make-and-take projects on and around Centre Square. Be sure to bring your camera for Kodak moments with our Crayola mascot "Tip" and our colorful cast of Crayola characters. "Raw Umber Jack," "Lemon Yellow Meringue, " "Granny Smith Apple," "Aqua Marine" and a rainbow of other bright stars inspired by the crayons we’ve made since 1903 will sign autographs and smile for the camera.
